The Hummingbird Bakery

Great Brand Campaigns
The Hummingbird Bakery (The Hummingbird) opened its doors in London’s Notting Hill in 2004. Its popular selection of simple, delicious baked goods spurred The Hummingbird to open its second location in South Kensington in 2007.

The Brief
Build profile for The Hummingbird and drive consumer traffic to its new South Kensington location:
• Generate media coverage in support of The Hummingbird brand
• Drive awareness of The Hummingbird’s delivery service and customised cake orders

The Challenge
Infiltrate new South Kensington community by developing grassroots appeal whilst building awareness of the Hummingbird brand through PR, seeding & strategic alliances.

The Solution
Communicate The Hummingbird’s point of difference with the South Kensington community through buzz-building PR, strategic seeding and like-minded brand alliances:

  The Hummingbird Bakery Press Cuttings

• Create a range of limited edition “South Ken” inspired cupcakes to highlight The Hummingbird’s new store opening. Distribute to target media
• Throw an exclusive launch party hosted by The Hummingbird founder, Tarek Malouf, at the new South Kensington location in conjunction with local nightclub, Boujis. Serve cocktails and “adults only” alcohol-infused cupcakes, including a lime and rum Mojito cupcake
• Collaborate with British fashion brand, Mulberry, to create limited edition cupcakes that celebrate their exclusive “Julie for Mulberry” range, by artist Julie Verhoeven. Make cupcakes available at both Hummingbird locations, the Mulberry pop-up store and the “Julie for Mulberry” launch tea party hosted by Stuart Vevers, Design Director for Mulberry, and Julie Verhoeven
• Organise a “design-a-cupcake” competition for children to win a chance to create and bake a batch of cupcakes at The Hummingbird
• Faciliate multiple sponsorship opportunities, including the Harry Potter Book Launch with Waterstones and Donna Aida Denim Launch

The Results
• PR Value: £500,000 +
• More than 50 pieces of press coverage, including features in Vogue, Observer, Eve, London Lite, Mail on Sunday, Independent magazine, Sunday Times Style, Radio 4’s Food Programme, Class & Wine and Spirit Magazine
